Naiscoot Lake 2024
Vocalizations
Witness Report - 2024- October 21st, 9:30 pm - Naiscoot Lake Island Campsite
Location: East end of Naiscoot Lake, Ontario. Island campsite.
Witnesses: Two individuals. (Matthew)
Event: Vocalization Response.
Summary: After a day of grouse hunting between Naiscoot and Evans Lake, my friend and I set up camp on the east end of Naiscoot Lake, cooking meat and fish on the island's campsite. Around 9:30 pm, we decided to call across the bay to ward off any wildlife drawn by the food's scent and to test the echo effect. Immediately afterward, a vocalization from about 150 meters to the east responded. It mimicked our deep hoots initially, then transitioned into sounds resembling a chimpanzee or gibbon, followed by a call similar to a kookaburra bird, and finally morphed into a deep owl-like sound. This response was significantly louder than any human voice, lasting approximately 10-15 seconds, and seemed close by. We attempted to provoke a second response, but the area remained silent for the rest of the night.
Observations: No noticeable scents. Earlier that day, we had explored the rocky, steep terrain between Naiscoot and Evans Lake, discovering several caves and unusual tree structures, including a crossed branch formation. No campsites were visible near the vocalization’s origin, and no other campers or hunters were seen east of the lake. The north side of Naiscoot Lake has rocky and cavernous terrain, which might support undetected movement.
Conclusion: The vocalization was unlike any wildlife we could identify and left us on edge throughout the night. We stayed vigilant but did not hear any further sounds after the initial encounter.
